Breakfast

Breakfast... my favorite meal of the day. The meal in the picture makes up about 95% of my breakfasts. I love this meal so much that I have a tendency to eat it again during the day (usually for lunch). Here's whats in my power breakfast: 7 scrambled eggs (with the yolks), 1 chopped up green pepper cooked in with the eggs, a butt-load of chipotle tabasco sauce, 6 fish oil caps (1.8g EPA), and some crystal light lemonade. Sometimes I'll throw in an apple or 2-3 kiwis, depending on what I can find lying around.

I've found that loading up on the protein (eggs) and going light on the carbs (pepper/fruit) gives me solid fuel until at least noon, if not longer, whereas if I have oatmeal or cereal, or if I skip breakfast completely, I'm hungry by 10:30. Oh, and for all you naysayers out there who think that the egg yolks are the devil's food, check this out.

Breakfast is far and away the most important meal of the day. Most people know it. But not everybody knows why. Here are a few reasons that having breakfast in the morning is good for you and your health...
  • By eating breakfast, you give your body some much needed fuel for it to run on for the beginning part of the day. Remember, your body has gone without any sort of nourishment for the last 7-9 hours while you were asleep, or longer if you didn't chow down on any midnight snacks.
  • In giving it something to run on in the AM will help you avoid snacking on unhealthy snacks later in the day. Studies have been done that consistently show that people who regularly eat breakfast eat cleaner throughout the day.
  • Having a nice, big breakfast in the morning decreases your body's insulin response throughout the rest of the day. Your body's insulin response is responsible for telling your body how to process the food it just took in (a high insulin response tells your body to store the carbohydrates as fat; a low insulin response uses those calories for energy).
  • Your brain runs on glucose, despite its inability to store glucose. By eating a big breakfast, you raise your body's supply of glucose (i.e. your blood sugar), and your brain runs better because it has the fuel to do so.
If you want to find more information on why breakfast is the most important meal you could ever eat, try googling "why is breakfast so important". Make sure that any sources you find not only tell you what to do, or that studies back up their suggestions, but also why their suggestions are legit.

Also, like I mentioned about a week ago, the First Annual WiscFit Burpee Challenge is starting today! 1 Burpee per day more than the previous day. Buy-ins cost you 10 burpees per each day you miss plus the burpees from those days (example- you miss days 1 and 2, you would owe 10 penalty burpees plus day 1's original 1 burpee for day 1, and 10 penalty burpees plus day 2's original 2 burpees for day 2, resulting in a 23 burpee buy-in).
