Chair Disease

In keeping with the mobility and stretching trend that I apparently started with yesterday's post, today's topic is all about something we all do every single day: sitting. According to a whole bunch of studies and research (outlined very nicely for you in this article by MSNBC Health) makes it abundantly clear that, while we all must die one day, our chair and sitting situations are definitely not helping matters at all.

According to the article, the average person spends 56 hours a week sitting down. Out of a total of 168 hours per week, that means that we're spending 1/3 of our lives in a seated position. Whether its sitting in lecture, watching TV, or going out to dinner with friends, 1/3 of our existence is spent in a non-mobile state. When you combine this fact with the idea that we also spend about 1/3 of our lives sleeping (read: lying down), 2/3 of our total time on this earth is spent not moving.

Is your mind blown yet? It should be.

So what can we all do about this sitting dilemma? If you're sitting down, try to get up and move around a little bit every half hour. If you're sitting for longer than that, match your moving around time accordingly.

Kelly Starrett from MobilityWod has another solution. Anytime you find yourself sitting down, do some mobility work. Here's a game you should try playing today: for every 5 minutes you spend sitting, spend one minute mobilizing your hips (I'll post my score to the comments tomorrow). Think that's a completely ridiculous amount of time to spend stretching? Think there's no way you can do that without drawing unwanted attention to yourself and your newly-mobilized hips? You, dear reader, are sadly mistaken. Your first stealth stretching lesson is now in session.
