I recently stumbled upon a fantastic deal on blueberries at Fresh Madison Market (on the corner of Lake and University): containers that were normally $3+ were marked down to $.75 each. I don't care what type of deadly botulism those blueberries might be packed with to make them $.75 each, that's a damn good deal! If I were stranded on a desert island for the rest of my life and could have only one fruit at my disposal (based solely on the health benefits and nutrient content), it would be these little blue marbles of awesome. Here's why...
- They contain insane amounts of antioxidants (specifically, anthocyanidins), which repair damage to the collagen matrix (i.e. the basis of all tissues in the body) caused by free radicals. Long story short, blueberries have antioxidants; antioxidants rebuild the body's tissues and help protect against things like cancer, peptic ulcers, varicose veins, hemorrhoids, cataracts, glaucoma, and heart disease.
- They're low in calories, containing only about 80 calories per cup.
- The bilberry (cousin berry of the blueberry) has been shown to both help improve vision and maintain vision as we age.
- They taste delicious.
So, if you want to do everything you can to avoid getting cancer, or if you want a low calorie snack, or if you want to improve your vision, or if you want to make christmas come early for your taste buds, try to get as many of these berries into your diet as possible.
