Friday The 13th

For a lot of people, Friday the 13th is a noticeable date. Some people refuse to travel or fly on Friday the 13th. Some people even go as far as not leaving their homes, or in some cases their beds. This is a great example of why: "Lucky Escape For Boy, 13, Hit By Lightning At 13:13 On Friday The 13th". The fear of Friday the 13th is called friggatriskaidekaphobia. Related to fitness? No, not really. But hey, at least you learned something...

Now on a more fitness related note... What are some fears that people have when it comes to working out? And more specifically than that, what are some fears people have about CrossFit? For the next five days, I'm going to try to talk about one specific fear that people have about working out and/or CrossFit.

Fitness Fear #1: Fear of not knowing what the hell you're doing

One of the reasons that a lot of people join big globogyms is because of all of the shiny machines. People see a treadmill, and they think "Hey, I can do that!". They might branch out to a new machine here or there (ellipticles, stationary bikes, or any number of selectorized weight machines), but for the most part, they'll never go near any sort of free weight unless they have somebody along with them who knows the ropes.

Since CrossFit is almost 100% machine-free (with the lone exceptions being the gravitron pull-up/dip assist machine and the Concept 2 rower), this fact alone keeps thousands of people from starting down the correct fitness path.

So how do you get over this fear? Check out our Online Fundamentals Course, or check out HQ's video archive to start learning the movements on your own. You can literally spend days watching all of the videos on there. In any case, just remember that even though you might have no idea what you're doing, you'll never be like this guy.
