Squat

The squat is one of my most favorite exercises, even though it's one of the toughest ones to master. For this reason, its no coincidence that its the very first video listed on the Online Foundations Course. Having good squat technique will help you perform many other exercises better (like the deadlift, clean, snatch, and thruster, just to name a few).

The air squat may seem simple, but there's a lot of little things that you have to do in order to make your squat technically sound. In order of importance, the most important things to remember when squatting are:
  1. Maintaining a good lumbar curve: make sure that your lower back doesn't round out when you're in the bottom of the squat.
  2. Stay back on your heels: you should be able to wiggle your toes at the bottom of the squat.
  3. Knees stay out, tracking over the feet: as soon as your knees start collapsing in towards each other, you can run into a whole bunch of knee potential knee problems.
  4. Squat below parallel: always always always make sure that you're squatting to the proper depth (crease of the hip drops below the knee).
If you remember these four points, you'll have a ridiculously solid foundation to build your squat on.
